Pre-arrival Housing Statement

IEP: The Language Institute, Georgia Institute of Technology

Dormitories

Dormitory rooms are available for intensive English students for Spring I & II Sessions as well as the Summer Session. Rooms are sometimes available for the Fall Semester.

The housing is in traditional-style dormitory rooms (two students per room, shared lounge, kitchen, and bathrooms.) All the dormitories are air-conditioned, and intensive English students are assigned to the same dormitories as regular Georgia Institute of Technology students.

Intensive English students must be enrolled in the intensive English program to live in Georgia Institute of Technology dormitories. Spring housing contracts are for two sessions: Spring I and Spring II (January - May). The Summer Session housing contract is for 12 weeks (mid-May- July).

The housing is in traditional-style dormitory rooms (two students per room, shared lounge, kitchen, and bathrooms.) All the dormitories are air-conditioned, and intensive English students are assigned to the same dormitories as regular [school name] students.

Students who want to live on campus must attend a housing meeting on the first day of the session. At the meeting, detailed information is given about the accommodations and the policies students must follow in order to live in campus housing. Following the meeting, students have an opportunity to see a model dorm room prior to signing the contract.

Once a student has been assigned to a room and has signed the housing contract the Georgia Institute of Technology Housing Department assumes responsibility for acquainting the student with the services, facilities, activities, policies and procedures that contribute to the residential community.

There is a full complement of staff available in each dormitory to provide support for students. Resident Life Coordinators live in the residence halls and assume responsibility for the residence hall. This includes supervising student staff, advising and counseling individuals, crisis management and administering Georgia Institute of Technology policies. The student affairs counselor at the Language Institute is also available to assist students or act as a liaison when necessary.

American Homes

Rooms in American homes are always available. Most students who live in American homes go through a homestay agency, which can make all of the arrangements before the student comes to Atlanta, Georgia. Each homestay host provides the student a private furnished room, breakfast and dinner, and all of the homes are accessible by public transportation.

Once the student arrives the homestay coordinator meets with the student and their host family/individual together to go over basic guidelines. The homestay coordinator is available to help the student should he/she have any problems concerning their homestay. If a problem cannot be resolved or if the student requests a change in homestays, the homestay coordinator will assign the student to another homestay host. The student affairs counselor at the Language Institute is also available to assist students or act as a liaison when necessary.

As way to monitor the quality of the homestay experience, the Language Institute conducts random surveys of students in homestays. Any issues that surface in the survey are discussed with the homestay coordinator.

Apartments

The student affairs counselor keeps a list of apartments that are often rented by students in the intensive English program. Information is given to students about, how to look for an apartment, safety issues to be aware of, and understanding the terms of the lease. It is the responsibility of the student to sign all contracts and leases after making decisions about location, expense, and condition of the living arrangement. The student affairs counselor is available to assist students or act as a liaison when necessary.

Costs

Price and quality will vary with each type of accommodation. If dormitory space is not available, the student must be prepared to rent or share an apartment, which costs more than a dormitory. The following prices are only estimates. Costs may vary.

DORMITORY $1812 per semester (2 sessions)
(does not include blankets, sheets, towels or food)
In the summer session, costs may vary.
AMERICAN HOME $600 - $650 per month
(prices will vary depending on whether particular
amenities such as meals are included)
APARTMENT $650 $800 per month (unfurnished 1 bedroom)
$800 - $1000 per month (unfurnished 2 bedroom)

Most apartments and American homes are not located close to the Georgia Institute of Technology campus, but the bus and train (Marta) provide adequate service.
