Center for English Language & Culture for International Students (CELCIS)DescriptionCELCIS is an intensive English program designed to prepare non-native English speakers to use English for univeristy study or their careers. There are four proficiency levels from elementary to advanced. Each level is comprised of twenty hours of instruction per week divided into three classes. Students take one hour a day each of Speaking/Listening and Grammar/Communication and two hours a day of Reading/Writing. Each level requires one semester (fall or winter) or two sessions (spring and summer) to complete. Students use university computer labs, both as part of their classes and as individuals. CELCIS is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).
LocationCELCIS is located on the campus of Western Michigan University in the small, friendly city of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Kalamazoo is the cultural and commercial center of southwest Michigan. It is 45 minutes from Lake Michigan and is near to numerous county and state recreation areas.
Teaching QualificationsRegular CELCIS instructors are all full time. They all have master's degrees in either teaching English as a second language or a related field. They all have either taught or studied abroad, and they all have experience in teaching English as a second language at the university level. Part-time instructors are hired on an as-needed basis.

Students can live in university dormitories, campus apartments, or homestays year round. They must be 18 to live in a campus apartment, but younger students are permitted to live in off-campus apartments. Student ServicesCELCIS students have all of the same services offered to Western Michigan University students available to them, including counseling, workshops on wellness, medical treatment at the health center, computer workshops, and clubs. In addition, CELCIS offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, such as conversation groups, school visits, field trips (to places such as Chicago and tourist areas of Michigan), cultural and sports events. Educational Service OpportunitiesAcademic advising is available daily. A letter of conditional admission will be given to those students who apply to Western Michigan University and who meet all requirements, except English proficiency. Students who successfully complete the advanced level of CELCIS do not need a TOEFL score for admission to all undergraduate and most graduate programs at the University. TransportationWestern Michigan University is located just 20 minutes from the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek Airport. There is train and bus service to other areas of the country, and there is a city bus system that CELCIS students can use for no charge. Application InformationApplicants must send a completed application, a $100non-refundable application fee, a $100 non-refundable tuition deposit, a copy of the passport identification page, a copy of high school or college transcripts-in English, and a financial statement showing $9000 of support for a 4-month semester.
