Haggerty English Language Program

Description

ESL courses are offered in four levels from elementary to advanced, with 18-20 hours per week of classes in all skill areas. Advanced students may take university courses while completing their ESL training. Students can also have conversation partners for practicing their English with American students.

Location

State University of New York at New Paltz is located just north of New York City-- it's about 90 minutes by public transportation from our school to Times Square, New York City!

We are located in the scenic Hudson Valley. New Paltz is a small, safe, college town with many nice restaurants and shops for student entertainment.

Teaching Qualifications

All full-time and adjunct ESL instructors have MA degrees in ESL, Applied Linguistics or related second language educational degrees. Full-time ESL instructors average over 12 years of experience in the classroom.

We offer student activities and field trips each session. The Conversation Partner program matches a student with an American university student for extra speaking/listening practice. 

The summer intensive program offers a five-week session mixing useful English classes with a variety of trips and activities exploring New York and the beautiful and historic Hudson Valley area.

Facilities

ESL students have the full rights of all our university students. They may use any university facilities including the gym, library or computer labs. They can attend all university functions such as sports events and concerts.

Students who are permitted to take an academic class will have added tuition costs (but their ESL total cost will also be lowered, if they replace some ESL courses with academic courses.

 Apartments and rooms for rent are available near campus, but we recommend that all new students begin living in the dormitories their first session. Costs listed for apartments are for monthly rental fees.

Student Services

Cultural Activities Program and orientation programs; all university services are open to ESL students.

 We hold mentoring sessions with each student each semester, so that we can help them to meet their language or academic goals.

Educational Service Opportunities

State University of New York at New Paltz offers a wide range of academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Academically admissible students who complete the ESL Program are not required to present TOEFL scores for admission as undergraduates.

Transportation

The campus is only 1.5 hours from New York City by bus or train; bus service is available to other nearby cities. The village of New Paltz is a 'walking community' just next to the University, so it's easy to get to restaurants, bars, and shops.

The campus is also near Stewart International Airport, Newburgh, New York.We provide airport pickup service from JFK Airport in New York city for newly-arriving students.
