Drexel English Language CenterDescriptionDrexel ELC is a member of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP), hosts the headquarters of the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP), and is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). We offer Intensive English and Global Business English Pre-MBA programs year-round in four 11-week terms; six-week (half-term) sessions are also available. At the upper levels the curriculum focuses on academic preparation for university study. There are six levels of Intensive English, from beginning to advanced. Full-time study includes at least 18 hours of classes per week: 15 hours of Speaking/Listening and Reading/Writing, plus a three-hour Special Topic chosen from academic, business, language skills, cultural or test preparation topics. Optional free grammar, pronunciation, and conversation classes (6 hours per week) are also available.
LocationDrexel ELC is located on the campus of Drexel University, in a safe residential area near the heart of beautiful, historic Philadelphia. It lies on the East Coast of the country, about 2 hours by car from mountains, seashore, New York City, and Washington, DC. "Philly" offers many cultural, recreational, and entertainment opportunities. The first capital of the U.S., it is now the nation's fifth-largest city.
Teaching QualificationsThe Director holds a doctoral degree, and all regular teachers in the program have master's or doctoral degrees in ESL, linguistics, or related fields. Staff members are actively engaged in professional activities and present papers at scholarly conferences. Several are authors of published ESL materials.

Other Programs:The Global Business English (GLOBE) Pre-MBA program is designed for both prospective and pre-MBA students, as well as business professionals. It is available to students with a university degree who place into ELC level 4 or higher. Required classes include The Language of Business Information, an integrated skills course that focuses on concepts and key vocabulary related to specific business topics. Other program features include MBA class observation and networking opportunities plus lectures and workshops.The ELC Plus program lets students who complete at least one term at ELC Level 4 or higher enroll in a Drexel University course for credit as part of their continuing English studies.

FacilitiesDrexel ELC is located in the Language & Communication Center on the campus of Drexel University. The Center also houses the university's foreign language program, classrooms, and a multi-media language lab. ELC students have free access to the university library, gym and athletic facilities, computer labs, and wireless internet service.

Drexel ELC offers three housing choices: Drexel World House Dormitory, located two blocks from the ELC, features shared rooms (2 or 3 students per room) and baths, a kitchen, lounge, and laundry facilities. Limited spaces available. International House, a large dormitory-style residence housing students from many universities, offers single rooms with shared bathrooms and kitchens. It is a 15-minute walk from the ELC. Homestays provide single rooms in an American home. Self-serve breakfasts each morning and 3 family-style dinners per week are included. Most require a 30-45 minute walk, or a short bus or subway ride. Student ServicesA weekly activities program includes visits to historical sites, art and cultural events, and entertainment centers; shopping trips; sports events; outdoor and recreational activities; and visits to New York City and Washington, DC. Two scholarships, called Allison Rose Fellowships, are awarded each term to continuing full time ELC students. The Conversation Network program gives ELC students opportunities for language and culture exchange with American university students. Educational Service OpportunitiesAcademic advising and visa counseling are available. Students in upper levels may be approved for enrollment in Drexel undergraduate courses. An institutional TOEFL is offered on a regular basis. Drexel ELC is also an IELTS test center. TransportationFrom Philadelphia International Airport (20 minutes): $10 (shuttle van), $25 (taxi), $50-70(private car). 30th Street Station (train) is 1 block from campus.
