English Language InstituteDescriptionThe English Language Institute at USF is an intensive English program at the University of South Florida in Tampa. The ELI is an academic unit within the College of Arts and Sciences at USF, and it serves as a teaching and research laboratory that delivers dynamic, innovative, and research-based instruction in English to Speakers of Other Languages. The ELI offers courses in English-for-Academic-Purposes and prepares students to attend U.S. colleges and universities. Its regular program offers five (5) levels of instruction. Classes meet twenty-five (21) hours each week during the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters.
LocationThe English Language Institute is located at the University of South Florida in Tampa, near the Gulf of Mexico. The Tampa area enjoys plenty of sunshine and a semi-tropical climate, with mild winters and tropical summers. Its central location makes it easy to get to the beach and to the popular attractions of Central Florida, such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World. Tampa offers many diverse, educational, cultural, and entertainment activities. Visitors and residents enjoy a thriving business community, visual and performing arts, major league sports, and attractions such as Busch Gardens, The Florida Aquarium, and Flatwoods Adventures. Tampa International Airport offers convenient, accessible travel to and from all parts of the United States and the world.
Teaching QualificationsThe majority of ELI faculty hold at least a Master's degree or are enrolled in the USF Master's program in Applied Linguistics.

FacilitiesThe ELI is located in the center of the USF campus. ELI students have access to the USF Library, recreation center (gym), USF sporting events and activities, tennis courts, soccer fields, art galleries, theater productions, and free movies on the lawn. ELI students can ride the USF shuttle bus for free and can go to the University Mall for shopping. The Museum of Science and Industry, where students can enjoy exhibitions and IMAX movies, is within walking distance. USF also has many dining facilities for students to choose from. There are fast food restaurants such as Subway and Burger King as well as a food court at the Marshall Center (the student center), and cafeteria-style restaurants at several locations throughout the campus. There are several Starbucks locations throughout campus for students to enjoy a quite moment together with friends or by themselves.

The use of the Recreation Center is optional and costs about $14.00 per month. Tickets to some events are extra.

The cost of tuition is for full-time students enrolled in our intensive English program. Fees are adjusted if students attend the ELI less than full time. A student ID is an extra $10.00 per student.

The ELI staff assists students in finding suitable accomodation off campus and on campus. Student ServicesExtra-curricular activities throughout the year include picnics, trips to Orlando theme parks, trips to the beach, hayrides, short-story clubs, bowling, International Festival, and instructional field trips, and a conversation partners program. Students can also take the Institutional TOEFL once each semester. There is free tutoring and many free workshops every semester. Educational Service OpportunitiesEducational Services Opportunities: Students have access to immigration, personal, and academic advising throughout the year. Conditional admission to USF is possible. TransportationThe University of South Florida is 25 minutes from the Tampa International Airport and can be easily reached by taxi or airport limousine. |
