Center for English as a Second Language (CESL)

Description

CESL is a well respected program that is housed within the Department of Linguistics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The program offers two 8-week terms in the fall and two 8-week terms in the spring. In the summer, CESL offers two 6-week terms. 

CESL has six levels, ranging from beginner English to Academic English with an additional seventh level for graduate students. Students prepare for university study in the upper levels. 

In addition to regular classes, CESL offers short-term and customized programs for groups that need flexibility.

Location

Carbondale (www.ci.carbondale.il.us) is a small, friendly town with lots of charm. It is located near the Shawnee National Forest (http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/shawnee/) and has many lakes, including one on the SIUC campus.

The city is located within easy driving distance to St. Louis, Missouri; Chicago, Illinois; and Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee. 

Teaching Qualifications

Each faculty member in CESL holds an MA-TESOL and two have PhDs. The average number of teaching years is 11 years, with an average of 7 years in CESL. The CESL faculty have lived and taught overseas so they understand how difficult learning a language is. CESL faculty are professionally active and stay current with the field of ESL theories and methodologies.

CESL is located on the forest-rich campus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Famous for its southern friendliness, Carbondale is a safe and comfortable place to study.

CESL classrooms are state of the art, with internet, DVD, computer, and document camera in each room. CESL also has a private computer lab dedicated to CESL students' use.

6-week terms have slightly reduced tuition ($1700), but the hours are nearly the same as an 8-week term.

Upon arrival, students will be assisted in making arrangements for living accommodations. Temporary housing is available on campus for one or two days.

Most students prefer to live in dormitories on campus (http://www.housing.siu.edu/). Rates change depending on the hall.

Two popular off-campus choices are Forest Hall and Ambassador Hall (http://www.campushabitat.com/Home/tabid/130/Default.aspx). There are many others available, too.

Educational Service Opportunities

CESL has a strong relationship with undergraduate and graduate admissions. CESL sponsors information sessions, an optional TOEFL class, and extensive academic advising for students interested in university admissions. 

Successful completion of CESL's highest level allows students to enter university degree program, whether they have met the university's TOEFL requirement or not.

SIUC grants conditional admission to undergraduate students.  Some graduate programs also offer conditional admission. 

Transportation

Carbondale is 100 miles (160 km) south of St. Louis, Missouri and is easily accessible from the St. Louis International Airport. There is a private van service from St. Louis to Carbondale called BART (phone).

Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is about six hours away. There are train and bus services from Chicago.

Wiliamson County Airport in Marion, Illinois, Carbondale's closest airport, is located about 18 miles from the SIUC campus.
