Description

The intensive English program offers 7 levels of instruction with a focus towards academic and professional English. The intensive curriculum is taught by experienced professionals with advanced degrees from superior universities.

Location

The Language Institute is part of Georgia Institute of Technology (GA Tech). The campus is located between downtown and midtown Atlanta. The southern border to campus is North Avenue, and the northern border to campus is 10th Street.

Teaching Qualifications

All instructors have Master's Degrees or Ph.D. Degrees in TESL, Applied Linguistics, Education, or language-related field.

A number of electives are offered every session, including TOEFL preparation, GRE/GMAT writing preparation, SAT/GRE vocabulary building, movie-  making, and pronunciation.  Intermediate/Advanced-level evening classes are offered in the summer, fall and spring semesters. Separate registration is required for the evening classes. The Language Institute also offers two three-week summer short courses and a two-week academic workshop series for incoming graduate students. Online and customized courses are also available.

Facilities

The GA Tech student I.D. card can be used to access the campus dining facilities, the Student Health Center, and the Campus Recreation Complex. Access to these facilities is activated when all the GT student requirements (immunizations & health insurance) have been met. Students are given the first 2 weeks of the session to submit the required documents.

Student Services

The student affairs counselor coordinates 2-3 student events each session. Information about volunteer opportunities is provided on a weekly basis and usually 1 community-service project is completed by the Language Institute students and faculty each session. In addition, students have the opportunity to attend workshops or make individual appointments for assistance with applications to U.S. academic programs.

Educational Service Opportunities

Students have access to Language Institute listening-practice materials, the Language Institute multi-media lab, the campus library, and many of the GA Tech computer labs. Space permitting, advanced-level students have the opportunity to audit 1 regular GA Tech academic class during the Summer, Fall I and Spring I sessions.

Transportation

The GA Tech campus is easily accessible by MARTA, the public transportation system. Monthly passes are available at a student discounted rate. A free GA TECH campus bus leaves from the Midtown Train Station approximately every 15 minutes and stops 1 block from the Language Institute. For students who prefer exercise, it takes approximately 10 minutes to walk to the Language Institute from the closest train station.
