English Language Institute

Description

The fully qualified and experienced faculty at Syracuse University's English Language Institute (ELI) provides students an exceptional opportunity to improve their English. Five proficiency levels (beginner to advanced) enable participants to be placed into the most appropriate classes. The modern facilities include excellent computer labs and classrooms dedicated for the use of ELI participants. Courses are offered for those pursuing academic or professional interests who are in need of enhancing their English oral or written communication skills. Students receive personal attention and guidance from the faculty and support staff.

Location

The Syracuse University ELI is located in the City of Syracuse (approximately 250 miles northeast of New York City) which is in Central New York State. Its convenient location allows ready travel to Niagara Falls, New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Toronto and Montreal.

A variety of off-campus housing is available in a range of prices. Students who want to live on campus can complete applications prior to their arrival in the U.S. Students living off campus must make their own arrangements. North Campus residence halls offer single rooms, open double rooms, split double rooms and suites. South Campus offers one- and two-bedroom apartments in the Slocum Heights complex and two-and three-bedroom apartments in the Skytop Apartments for undergraduate students. South Campus also has three small residence halls that offer single rooms for undergraduates.

Student Services

Advising,letters of recommendation, assistance when applying to universities. Special activities such as trips, films, and University lectures help expose students to situations that promote language acquisition. Conversation partners and groups are led by SU staff and student volunteers as well as community volunteers.

Educational Service Opportunities

Visits to museums, cultural events (Concerts, theatre, symphony, and opera) historic sites and natural attractions are arranged for ELI students. In addition, conversation partners, home visits and guest speakers contribute to language immersion.

Transportation

Syracuse (Hancock) Airport is 10 minutes from the University (Airlines: American, Continental, Delta, JetBlue, Northwest,  USAir, and United). The University can also be reached by train (Amtrak) http://www.amtrak.com/, and/or bus (Greyhound) http://www.greyhound.com/. Taxis are available from the airport to the campus about $30 fare.
