Seattle Central Institute of English

Description

SCIE offers general English, academic preparation (College Bridge), high school completion, and an international internship program. Students in beginning to intermediate classes study reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar. Advanced students may study courses such as TOEFL Preparation or Pronunciation. College Bridge students study academic English and are enrolled in college classes at the same time. Students who complete this program are admitted directly into full time studies at Seattle Central Community College.

SCIE is located in one of Seattle's liveliest neighborhoods only a few minutes' walk from downtown. Numerous entertainment opportunities - restaurants, shopping, theaters, baseball - are nearby. Seattle is one of the safest cities in the US. In addition, Seattle has many outdoor recreation opportunities. Hiking, biking, skiing, and boating are just some of the activities readily available. Seattle's natural beauty, dynamic cultural and social life, and safe, clean environment make it a great place to live.

The above figures represent the cost for a one month stay. The hotel quoted is a youth hostel in downtown Seattle which accepts students for long term housing.

Student Services

SCIE offers international student scholarships, a conversation partner program, opportunities for internships in Seattle community organizations, free tutoring, career planning, personal counseling, and an outstanding activities program. Quarterly activities offered include trips to Canada, outdoor adventures like whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and skiing, and trips to see local professional sports teams (Mariners, Sonics) and other local events.

Educational Service Opportunities

SCIE graduates may enter the college directly; no TOEFL or other test is required. All students may apply for conditional admission. Students are eligible to enter the College Bridge Program after completing level 3 or obtaining a 470 TOEFL score. In College Bridge, students may attend some college courses for credit while continuing to improve English proficiency. College advisors and counselors are available to assist with course selection, academic planning, and personal issues. The College Transfer Center assists students in transferring to 4 year universities after completing 2 years at the community college.

Transportation

The Seattle bus system is one of the best in the United States. Several major routes stop in front of the college. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is just 20 minutes away by car or bus.
