Center for English Studies (ACCESS)

Description

Since 1974, The Ashland Center for English Studies (ACCESS) has been equipping international students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences of English they need to fully engage with English-speaking communities around the globe. The ACCESS curriculum is designed for academically-motivated students who need to meet the English proficiency requirements of Ashland University before beginning undergraduate, MBA, MEd, and seminary degree programs. In addition, ACCESS provides English language instruction for international exchange students and international visitors with an avocational interest in learning English. Recreational activities and field trips to major league athletic games, shopping malls, and cultural and historic points of interest in Ohio are also an important part of the ACCESS experience. The Academic Transition Program permits advanced students to take part-time academic classes for credit at no extra cost.

All single students under the age of 22 must live on-campus in a residence hall or with an American homestay family, if an opening is available. Homestay is a popular housing option with ACCESS students, but the number of families providing homestay opportunities is limited and students are placed on a first-come, first-served basis. Graduate students typically choose to live off-campus but may choose to live on-campus.  Students may request to live with American roommates (fall and winter semesters only). During the summer, dormitory rates are lower, and students do not purchase a meal plan.

Student Services

Airport pickup services are available. The Office of International Student Services will assist in finding off campus housing. ACCESS assists in locating homestay opportunities. ACCESS also provides a full schedule of student activities, such as attending professional sporting events, going to amusement parks, shopping trips to malls, roller skating, laser tag, riding horses, canoeing, or snow skiing. Students are also encouraged to attend campus events and clubs and use the Ashland University Recreational Center.

Educational Service Opportunities

Students can request conditional admission to the undergraduate program or the graduate programs (MBA, M.Ed.) of Ashland University. Students who meet the language entrance requirements for the Academic Transition Program may begin one or two classes toward a degree while studying English in ACCESS. Upon meeting the English language proficiency requirement of Ashland University and/ or completing the Academic Transition Program, students begin fulltime study toward their chosen degree. The director of ACCESS, in conjunction with the International Student Advisor and the director of International Student Services, advises ACCESS students moving into fulltime study at Ashland University to ensure a smooth transition. The director also advises students on how to apply for admission to other institutions or transfer into another English language program.

Ashland is an easily walkable city for all students. Ashland Public Transit shuttles are available 24 hours a day.
