Intensive English Language ProgramDescriptionThe Intensive English Program offers two semester courses (15 weeks) and one summer course from mid-July to mid August (4 weeks) with a primary focus on preparing international students for the academic English requirements needed to enter or continue in American universities and colleges. The IELP provides 22 hours of instruction per week and focuses on the academic skills of reading, writing, vocabulary development, notetaking, oral presentation and TOEFL.

Teaching QualificationsAll instructors have at least a Master's Degree in TEFL or an associated field and have international teaching experience.

Other Programs:The University, in conjunction with the IEP, offers credit bearing ESL classes for international students, international exchange students, and immigrants and refugees in the community. The total number of students each semester is about 60-75. The College of Education and Human Development offers a Master's Degree in Literacy Education with a concentration in ESL. TOEFL preparation is a part of the IEP program.

FacilitiesThe IELP is housed in Payson Smith Hall, the main administration building on USM's Portland campus. All campus buildings have wireless Internet access; classrooms are equipped with additional AV equipment (overhead projectors, TV/video/DVD players.) Students have easy access to a computer lab (100+ stations). There is free shuttle bus service from the residence halls to campus.

Assistance with University placement is a free service with the IEP program. USM's Office of Admission will charge an application fee of $40.

The tuition stated above ($3550) includes all university fees for a 15-week semester. Health insurance is required, but students can find their own plan. The cost of books varies, but is usually not as high as $175. Tuition and fees for the 4-week summer session is $1710. Health Insurance for summer session is $150. Student ServicesThe IELP and Office of International Exchange offer a wide variety of organized trips to Boston, NYC, Montreal, Washington DC, and other areas of local interest. International Students' Organization also organizes skiing, hiking, sledding, skating trips. Students also have access to the University outing clubs and all student organizations. Educational Service OpportunitiesTutoring, counseling and advising, conversation partners, assistance with college placement, part-time enrollment in college credit course (advanced students), conditional admission to University via a Bridge Program, access to all university facilities and computers.
