Studies in American LanguageDescriptionSince 1975, Studies in American Language (SAL) has continuously offered high-quality English language instruction that meets the professional, academic, and practical needs of its students. Classes are designed for those students planning to attend an American college or university and for others who wish to improve their English communication skills for professional or personal reasons. In addition to a challenging academic curriculum, SAL also provides students with direct exposure to the American culture through field trips and activities.
LocationLocated on the San Jose State University campus in the city's thriving downtown area, Studies in American Language (SAL) offers students the excitement of studying at a large metropolitan campus where many cultures and nationalities meet. SAL students are within walking distance of many trendy restaurants, parks, movie cinemas, museums, shopping facilities, banks, hotels and theaters. SAL students will find sightseeing to be very easy by using the convenient free public transportation with their SJSU ID card. Students will find the comfortable climate of the Silicon Valley to be mild year round with 300 days of sunshine. The beaches of Santa Cruz and Carmel and the cityscapes of San Francisco and Berkeley are within an hour of campus. In the winter season, skiing and other mountain sports are approximately 3 hours from San Jose.
Teaching QualificationsFull-time faculty hold Master's degrees related to teaching English to speakers of other languages. All teachers have years of experience in creating academic and communicative courses. Administrators and faculty in the business courses typically hold an MA in Linguistics and an MBA.

Other Programs:SAL's Business English Programs give students a special focus on English for the global workplace. Business courses, electives, and activities add to the core programs to serve students who want to acquire professional English skills.
Online and evening programs allow flexible study for busy students. Available courses include Business English, TOEFL Preparation, and Pronunciation. All SAL students receive a San Jose State University (SJSU) student ID card which enables them to use on-campus facilities, the state of the art computer lab located inside of the SAL classroom building, and the local bus and train transportation service.
