The English Language Center

Description

Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia offers 35 doctoral, 60 master's and 68 bachelor's degrees in liberal arts and sciences, business, education, engineering and technology, and health sciences. Its English Language Center promotes effective, high-quality language instruction. There are six seven-week sessions per year with twenty hours of instruction on five levels. Average class size is 12-18 students. Special Programs are available for groups with specific subject and program length requirements. The Bridge Program combines academic credit courses and non-credit English courses and is available to conditionally-admitted graduate and undergraduate students. The ELC also offers Conversation Partner and TOEFL preparation programs.

Old Dominion University is located in Norfolk, Virginia, which has a population of 234,000 people. Norfolk has a warm climate (9.5 C in winter, 30 C in summer) and is 30 minutes from the ocean resort of Virginia Beach and 20 minutes away from an international airport. Washington, D.C. is approximately three hours away by car, and New York is six hours away. It is approximately 1 hour away from tourist attractions such as Williamsburg and Busch Gardens.

All English Language Center instructors are experienced and have master's degrees in TESOL or Applied Linguistics.  Most have lived and taught English all over the world.

The Graduate and Undergraduate Bridge Programs are designed for students who have been admitted to ODU and whose TOEFL scores are between 500 and 550 (iBT 61-79). These programs combine credit courses with noncredit courses in English. Bridge students can achieve full-time status at ODU after successfully completing two semesters in these programs.
