English Language InstituteDescriptionThe English Language Institute (ELI) of the University of Hartford offers a comprehensive academic program designed for international students who need to improve their English language skills before starting their studies at an American college or university, particularly the University of Hartford. Committed to giving students the best English instruction, the ELI uses the most current textbooks, supplementary materials and instructional techniques available in the field of language learning. The faculty of the English Language Institute hold advanced degrees in English, linguistics or related fields and have considerable experience in teaching English as a Second Language. Students receive 25 hours of instruction per week, Monday through Friday, in the classroom and the audio/video Resource Center. Courses emphasize oral/aural skills, reading comprehension, vocabulary development, grammar usage and writing skills development. Supplementary help is available through computer-assisted language learning.
LocationConnecticut is home to many of Fortune magazine's 500 largest American industrial companies. Hartford,the capital of Connecticut, is the fourth largest U.S. financial services center,and is known as the "insurance capital of the world". It is a mid-size city(about 125,000 inhabitants in a metropolitan area of more than one million) located in scenic New England. The major business centers of Boston and New York are about two hours from the University. Connecticut enjoys a temperate -zone climate with variable weather conditions. Students should come prepared for winter temperatures that average between 19 and 35 degrees Fahrenheit and summer temperatures that average between 60 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit.

AccommodationsHousing for non-matriculated ELI students is normally not available on the main campus. Should a student wish to live on campus, that student must wait for space-available and a first come, first served basis. On-campus housing is available for ELI students during the summer sessions. The ELI office will assist international students who are looking for apartments off campus. The office will facilitate the names, addresses and telephone numbers of apartment complexes which cater to the University of Hartford students. Students are responsible for all financial and legal terms of renting an apartment.
