Description

Established in 1974, Virginia Tech's English Language Program enables students to meet their personal, academic, and professional goals through English language study.

Intensive English features:

  • Full-time, intensive instruction in all language skill areas
  • Eight levels of instruction from high-beginning to advanced
  • Concentrated preparation for TOEFL® and university studies
  • An advanced computer-assisted learning center

The English Language Program is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).

The English Language Program is part of the Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute (VTLCI), which also provides degree preparation programs, foreign language training and intercultural training.

Location

Virginia Tech’s Northern Virginia Center is located in Falls Church, an historic city in the heart of Northern Virginia. Falls Church has the character of a small town. Proximate Washington, D.C., convenient to public transportation and near highway access, this location is ideal for exploration of the national capital region. The Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. is a 20-minute Metro ride.

Restaurants, shopping and reasonably-priced, short-term housing options are abundant in the area.. Much of the community is walk-able. Two Metro stations provide easy access to Washington, D.C. attractions. Many foreign nationals working in embassies, international organizations and businesses affiliated with international relations and trade live in Falls Church. Facilities

The Northern Virginia Center is a 9755 square meter, state-of-the-art graduate education facility situated adjacent to the West Falls Church Metro station.

Over 1500 students are currently pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees and certificates of advanced study at the Northern Virginia Center, supported by nearly 100 university faculty and staff. The Center houses a branch of the Virginia Tech University Libraries. It is also home to several research and academic departments. Graduate programs offered at the Northern Virginia Center include Education, Engineering, Information Technology, Natural Resources, MBA, and Executive MBA.

Accommodations

Homestay:  Homestay, or staying with an American host, offers a cultural experience by providing additional time to practice English on a more personal level. Homestay hosts are selected based on proximity to the Northern Virginia Center and are convenient to bus or train lines. This housing option is ideal for short-term stays.

Private Shared Accommodation:  Several extended stay housing alternatives are available near the Northern Virginia Center. These are convenient to transportation and available for short- or long-term stays. Accommodation is typically shared among roommates. Apartments are fully furnished and equipped - ready for move-in.

Apartments:  Apartments provide private, economical living situations best-suited to long-term students and families. They are abundant in the Falls Church vicinity. Many of are within walking distance of the Northern Virginia Center, are on the Metro line or are on town bus routes.

Student Services

The Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute arranges activities throughout the year based upon student interest. Trips may include shopping, live theater, music concerts, lectures, museum visits, sightseeing tours, caving, hiking, swimming and kayaking.

No other city in the United States offers the variety of cultural, arts and historical attractions found in Washington, D.C.: monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the World War II Memorial; government sites like the White House, the Pentagon, the Capitol Building (pictured left) and the Supreme Court; and some of the world's most famous museums, among them the National Gallery of Art, the Air and Space Museum, the Museum of Natural History.

Educational Service Opportunities

Through its technology center, VTLCI makes available some of the newest and most effective computer-assisted language learning software on the market. Self-paced, computer-based training is integrated throughout the Intensive English curriculum to support classroom teaching, address students’ individual learning needs and provide instruction in special interest areas.

TOEFL iBT Preparation is a featured elective in the Intensive English course series. High-intermediate language proficiency and concurrent enrollment in Intensive English core courses are required.  The TOEFL iBT Preparation course features a complete overview of the course format, sections and question types. 

Transportation

In the National Capital Region, VTLCI is located in the Northern Virginia Center. This facility, shared by Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia, is in the city of Falls Church, approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of Washington, D.C. The Northern Virginia Center is conveniently located just off Route 66 at Route 7 (Leesburg Pike). My Metro, take the Orange Line to the West Falls Church stop. The Northern Virginia Center is immediately adjacent to the station beside George Mason Middle and High School.

Affiliations

VTLCI faculty and administrators in the English Language Program participate in Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and the NAFSA: Association of International Educators.  The VTLCI has endorsed and conforms to TESOL standards for postsecondary intensive English programs and the NAFSA Code of Ethics/ Principles for English Programs and Determination of English Proficiency.

Application Information

Prospective students fill out and submit an on-line application and send supporting documents by e-mail or fax.  An I-20 used to obtain a student visa is shipped by express mail within two business days once an application is complete.
